Moosehide Mittens Workshop POSTPONED Date TBD

Learners will use traditional textile tanned moose hides to craft custom made winter mittens under the guidance of syilx fashion designer and artist Krystal Withakay. Hand measurements will be required in advance of the workshop to ensure adequate materials are available.

Ribbon Skirts - Pattern Drafting and Construction

Okanagan Indigenous Music and Arts Society proudly hosts a Ribbon Skirt workshop with Syilx artist Krystal Withakay. Learners will receive the knowledge to construct a ribbon skirt on their own through the creation of a pattern block that is custom to their body and technical skills to ensure they pick the correct materials on their own. They will be able to teach someone their knowledge and learn about Syilx perspectives on wearing skirts, the origins, and some nation to nation differences or similarities.

Women's Warrior Drumming Circle

Okanagan Indigenous Music and Arts Society is honoured to observe this day of recognition by inviting our Women Warriors to join us with a drumming circle led by sqilxw song carrier Krystal Withakay to uphold our Indigenous ways of being healthy and loving up our tmxʷulaxʷ with our songs!

Hike is moderate difficulty, good footwear and weather appropriate attire required.

Meet up location is at the base of Mount Boucherie (East Boundary entrance) light snacks and drinks will be provided. Registration required for lunch.

In this unprecedented and unyielding undoing of our arts sector due to physical distancing and mandated measures preventing all of us from gathering, experiencing and earning, the Okanagan Indigenous Music and Arts Society (OIMAS) is moved to launch a celebration of our artistic resilience that will be shared amongst the entire community. We are excited to announce our partnership with Kelowna’s Gospel Mission and Sncewips Heritage Museum to launch the “Honouring Our Stories” Artistic Mural and Beautification Project launching January 15th, 2021. 

Theme: What does Resilience and Reconciliation mean to you?

OIMAS is excited to sponsor the $10,000.00 prize for the winning installation!
